MISSION :

Our mission is to promote the educational and psychosocial development of children in difficulty in the poor communities of Southwest Coast of Haiti. The foundation aims to provide children in need with a healthy and stable environment that facilitates their learning and personal development.

GOALS

The Margarette Tarte Foundation has the following objectives:

a.- Provide educational and psychosocial support to children in need in the communities of Southwest Coast of Haiti (Port-Salut to Tiburon);

b.- Provide a welcoming environment for children in difficult situations with qualified and competent staff in order to promote their educational, emotional and physical development;

c.- Set up an establishment with a primary school and a dispensary to meet the priority needs of needy children in the communities of Southwest Coast of Haiti (Port-Salut to Tiburon);

d.- Work in partnership with local organizations and associations to encourage excellence in education and facilitate the development of children in difficulty in the communities of Southwest Coast of Haiti (Port-Salut to Tiburon);

e.- Encourage the literacy of single girl-mothers and allow them to learn a profession to obtain their financial autonomy in their environment.

Funding of MTF

Our Foundation relies on the generous contribution of its donor members to obtain funding in order to implement certain educational, health and psychosocial programs for the needy children in poor communities located on the Southwest Coast of Haiti. The Board of Directors (BoD) will organize fundraising activities to raise funds to pay local staff and feed the children on a regular basis. He solicits donations from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the local, national and international level to obtain funding to achieve the objectives of this foundation.

Structure of MTF

Our Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors (BoD) composed of (5-7) volunteer members who have at heart the well-being of the needy children in the communities located on the Southwest Coast of Haiti (Port-Salut to Tiburon). The Board of Directors may delegate certain powers to the local committee for the recruitment of staff such as: (teachers, educators, psychologists, nurses and animators) for the purpose of supervising children with learning difficulties and malnutrition in communities where the foundation is present.

La fondation Margarette Tarte a vu le jour le 26 mai 2022 dans la petite ville Sinking Spring de l’Etat Pennsylvanie des États-Unis d’Amérique. Cette initiative est mise en place par Margarette Tarte, son conjoint Jean Daniel Chéry et elle est soutenue par certains membres de sa famille résidant à l’étranger. Margarette Tarte est née aux Irois, une commune de la côte sud-ouest, mais elle a quitté son village natal à l’âge de six ans pour aller vivre avec ses grands-parents dans la collectivité de Dumont, plus particulièrement sur l’habitation Fabre.

Elle y a passé toute son enfance chez ses grands-parents paternels : Lewaney et Antoinette Tarte. Margarette est la fille cadette de Brenquey (Ismaille) Tarte, l’unique garçon du couple et trois autres sœurs. Elle a voyagé aux États-Unis très jeune et elle y a complété ses études secondaires à New York. Cependant, elle se rendait souvent en vacances à Dumont pour visiter ses grands-parents lorsqu’ils étaient vivants et d’autres membres de la famille.

Durant ses vacances, elle a constaté les difficultés socio-économiques de certaines familles qui ont beaucoup d’enfants à nourrir. Cependant, les habitants du milieu qui vivaient en grande partie de l’agriculture ne cultivent plus leurs terres cultivables à cause de l’érosion et de la sécheresse. Ils ne pratiquent plus l’élevage, l’artisanat et la pêche. Les jeunes filles quittent très tôt l’école en devenant des mères célibataires dépourvues d’assistance. Elles n’ont pas les moyens d’apprendre un métier pour obtenir leur autonomie financière.

Les conditions difficiles des habitants du milieu ont entraîné une pauvreté endémique qui affecte le bien-être et l’éducation des enfants de Dumont. Margarette Tarte ressentait la nécessité de venir en aide aux enfants qui ne pouvaient pas se rendre à l’école ni manger à leur faim. Au début, elle envoyait sur une base régulière son argent à certaines familles pour nourrir quelques enfants.

À la fin de chaque année, elle organisait une petite fête sur l’habitation familiale pour les gens de Dumont en offrant une enveloppe et un plat chaud aux enfants du milieu. De jour en jour, le nombre d’enfants en difficultés s’agrandit et les besoins se font sentir d’où la nécessité de créer la fondation Margarette Tarte.

Empowering Haiti’s Vulnerable Youth: The Mission of the Margarette Tarte Foundation

The Margarette Tarte Foundation was officially established on May 26, 2022, in the small town of Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, USA. Founded by Margarette Tarte and her husband Jean Daniel Chéry, the initiative is supported by several members of their family living abroad.

Born in Les Irois, a coastal commune in southwestern Haiti, Margarette left her native village at the age of six to live with her paternal grandparents in the rural locality of Dumont, specifically in the area known as Habitation Fabre.

It was in this modest agricultural community that she spent her entire childhood, raised by her grandparents Lewaney and Antoinette Tarte. Margarette is the youngest daughter of Brenquey (Ismaille) Tarte, the couple’s only son, and she has three older sisters. She emigrated to the United States at a young age and completed her secondary education in New York. Nevertheless, she returned frequently to Dumont for vacation visits with her grandparents and other family members.

During these visits, Margarette witnessed firsthand the growing socioeconomic challenges faced by many local families, particularly those with multiple children and limited resources. Once a vibrant agricultural hub, Dumont now grapples with soil erosion and persistent drought, rendering its fertile lands unproductive. Traditional activities such as livestock farming, fishing, and craftsmanship have all but disappeared.

Meanwhile, many young girls drop out of school early and become single mothers with no access to support or vocational training, leaving them economically dependent and vulnerable.

These harsh conditions have given rise to chronic poverty, significantly affecting the health, education, and future prospects of children in the region. Deeply moved by this reality, Margarette Tarte felt compelled to act. Initially, she began providing regular financial support to a few families in need, helping to feed local children.

At the end of each year, she also organized small community gatherings at her family home in Dumont, distributing envelopes of cash and offering hot meals to children.

Over time, the number of children in need grew, as did the urgency for a more structured and sustainable response. This led to the creation of the Margarette Tarte Foundation, a formal vehicle to channel support and empower vulnerable youth in Haiti.

MISSION
Notre mission consiste à favoriser le développement éducatif et psychosocial des enfants en difficultés sur la côte sud-ouest d’Haiti ( Port-Salut à Tiburon). La fondation vise à offrir aux enfants dans le besoin un environnement stable qui facilite leur apprentissage et leur épanouissement personnel et émotionnel.

OBJECTIFS :

La fondation Magarette Tarte vise les objectifs suivants :

a.- Fournir un support éducatif et psychosocial aux enfants dans le besoin sur la côte sud-ouest (Port-Salut à Tiburon);

b.- Offrir un milieu d’accueil avec un personnel qualifié et compétent aux enfants en situations difficiles de la côte sud-ouest de manière à favoriser leur développement éducatif, émotionnel et physique;

c.- Mettre en place un établissement avec une école primaire et un dispensaire pour répondre aux besoins prioritaires des enfants nécessiteux de la côte sud-ouest (Port-Salut à Tiburon);

d.- Travailler en partenariat avec les organisations et associations du milieu pour encourager l’excellence en éducation et faciliter l’épanouissement des enfants en difficultés sur la côte sud-ouest (Port-Salut à Tiburon);

e.- Encourager l’alphabétisation des filles-mères célibataires et les aider à apprendre un métier pour contribuer à leur autonomie financière.

Mission
The mission of the Margarette Tarte Foundation is to support the educational and psychosocial development of vulnerable children living along Haiti’s southwestern coast (from Port-Salut to Tiburon). The foundation aims to provide disadvantaged children with a stable and nurturing environment that fosters both academic learning and emotional well-being.

Objectives

The Margarette Tarte Foundation is committed to achieving the following objectives:

a. Provide educational and psychosocial support to children in need across the southwestern region of Haiti, particularly from Port-Salut to Tiburon;

b. Offer a safe and welcoming environment staffed by qualified and compassionate professionals to support the educational, emotional, and physical development of children facing difficult circumstances;

c. Establish a facility that includes a primary school and a health clinic, designed to meet the most urgent needs of underserved children in the region;

d. Work in partnership with local organizations and community associations to promote educational excellence and foster the holistic development of children in vulnerable situations;

e. Promote literacy among young single mothers and provide them with vocational training to support their path toward economic independence.

Chaque période de fin d’année, Margarette Tarte, la petite fille de Lewaney Tarte qui réside aux États-Unis se fait le devoir d’envoyer de l’argent aux enfants de l’habitation Fabre où elle y a passé une partie de son enfance avec ses grands parents.

Cette distribution est devenue une tradition pour les parents de l’habitation Fabre qui attendent toujours cette journée fatidique pour recevoir une enveloppe de la part de Margarette Tarte. Il ne s’agit pas de donner un plat de nourriture chaud, mais les enfants de cette localité partent avec une somme d’argent et des cadeaux de Margarette et son conjoint Jean Daniel. Il est important de remercier tous ceux et celles qui ont préparé la nourriture pour une centaine d’enfants sur la supervision de Maxime Frenel alias Ti Pierre. On encourage d’autres personnes de la diaspora à suivre cette action citoyenne pour témoigner leur solidarité aux habitants de Dumont afin de soutenir les familles en difficultés.
On sait déjà que les autorités publiques ne se préoccupent pas du milieu paysan. Les familles sont très pauvres et les enfants ne sont pas nourris à leur faim. Les élus locaux n’ont pas les moyens de subvenir aux besoins de la population qui éprouve beaucoup de difficultés à se procurer des biens de consommation à cause de la cherté de la vie. 

Chacun de nous doit être solidaire avec les habitants du milieu paysan, car ils ont grandement besoin de notre assistance.
Une simple contribution peut faire la différence dans les familles paysannes et on permettra aux enfants de se rendre à l’école et de recevoir un plat chaud au quotidien.

A Holiday Tradition of Giving: Margarette Tarte Brings Hope to Children in Fabre, Dumont

Each year during the holiday season, a heartwarming tradition continues in the rural community of Fabre in Dumont. Margarette Tarte, the granddaughter of Lewaney Tarte and now residing in the United States, sends financial support to underprivileged children in the area where she spent part of her childhood.

What began as a personal gesture has evolved into a cherished annual event for the families of Fabre, who eagerly await the day when their children receive envelopes filled with money and gifts from Margarette and her partner, Jean Daniel. Unlike typical food drives, this initiative allows each child to go home with tangible assistance that can help meet their everyday needs.

The day’s activities also include a community meal, with hot food prepared for more than a hundred children under the coordination of Maxime Frenel, affectionately known as Ti Pierre. Community volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the event’s success, offering time and resources in support of this act of solidarity.

Margarette’s commitment serves as a model of civic engagement, inspiring others in the Haitian diaspora to step forward and support the rural families of Dumont—many of whom live in extreme poverty and face daily challenges in securing basic necessities.

In the absence of meaningful public support, rural families often struggle to feed their children, let alone send them to school. With the rising cost of living, the burden grows heavier each year. Contributions like Margarette’s not only provide relief but also restore hope and dignity.

“As citizens, we must stand in solidarity with our rural communities,” says Jean-Marie Mondésir, a committed resident of Dumont and editor of La Voix de Dumont. “Even the smallest contribution can change lives—helping children go to school and receive a hot meal every day.”
